Lois Lane not the female lead in Man of Steel?

By now I’m sure many people have heard this less than stellar news: Variety has reported that Lois Lane will not be the female lead in “Man of Steel.” Instead, that honor goes to some as of yet unidentified character, with Alice Eve, Diane Kruger and Rosamund Pike purportedly vying for the mystery role.

This article, before some editing, also said that purported Lois front-runners like Rachel McAdams and Jessica Biel were unlikely to get the role, because the filmmakers didn’t want an actress whose name would overshadow Cavill’s. This information has since been removed.

Many followup articles have speculated that Lois Lane will not be in the film at all; however, Latino Review has now reported  that the female lead role mentioned is in fact a villain, specifically Ursa, and that Lois will still have a role.

Whether or not either of these articles is entirely accurate, I’m more than a little concerned by this news. And not just as a Lois fan; as a fan of Superman in general, I find this very troubling. The Latino Review article, if true, would lessen my concerns somewhat – if the female lead is a villain rather than a new love interest, it’s more likely Lois will still have a significant role – but it bears talking about anyway…
